Off The Clock: X-Men First Class

Mystery Science Theater - taken from jeffbots.com

IMDB movie poster - X-Men First ClassSo another movie premiere on a date night with the fiancée, life is good. Something which made the activity even better, was the movie itself.

The Good

I don't want to spoil the movie, but it starts off in Poland 1944 during the Nazi occupation and moves on from there. Following the lives of  Professor Xavier and Magneto.

The movie's story line is built on historical fiction set during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Mutants are becoming more numerous and becoming aware of the existence of other mutants.

The Bad

There was plenty of fun thrown into the movie as should be expected from a recent movie based on a Marvel property. They did deviate from what has become an expected element, the foreshadowing for the next movie after the credits. I'm just telling you this, so you don't waste your time waiting for one.

Although I feel like I really can't fault the move for the lack of one. They may still be deciding where they're going to take the franchise after this one. Then again the number of Marvel movies that's been coming out in recent times has been rather amazing, Thor, X-Men: First Class, and Captain America coming out July 22nd.

My Recommendation

If you're at all a fan of the X-Men, go see this movie. It's a strong addition to the movies in Marvel universe and does a good job as a prequel to the X-Men Trilogy and Origins: Wolverine.

Off the Clock: Thor Review

Thor comic picture http://comicsmedia.ign.com/comics/image/article/723/723845/thor-20060807000751884_640w.jpg

Yesterday I had my last final for the semester, my fiance and I hadn't been out on a real date for a while either so we went and grabbed some tickets to the midnight premiere of Thor in 3D.

My thoughts on the movie as a whole

I must admit, I wasn't all that excited to this movie. I was thinking "meh, another comic book movie. I'm not at all familiar with this character though."

While the movie was very much the typical Marvel-comic-made-movie, it was a fun ride and worth the price of admission (minus the extra cost for 3D, but more on that later).

The movie is very much like Iron Man, lots of explosions and humor mixed in. The screenplay is pretty cohesive with only one real notable cliche used for a plot convenience. But I'll let that slide since the visuals were great and the acting was well done. Anthony Hopkins as Odin and Chris Hemsworth as Thor. They were very believable in the roles and the dialogue for the most part didn't seem forced. The aforementioned cliche is the only piece of dialogue that stuck out in my mind as not making any sort of sense with what was happening.

Between the two Iron Man movies and Thor, I believe there's a stride that's really starting emerge with a good formula for these type of movies. Very believable characters (from a comic book perspective), mixed with some decently compelling storyline, and gratuitous amounts of explosions in the mix. Along with the obligatory appearance by Samuel Jackson as Nick Fury of SHIELD (after the credits have rolled of course).

I really hope future Marvel movies follow suit so we don't end up with sh*t-piles like both Incredible Hulk movies and the 3rd Spiderman.

A rant about 3D

What is Hollywood's current obsession with 3D? So many movies have had 3D lately and quite frankly I'm getting tired of it.

3D adds 0 to the actual quality of the movie. If things are done well or even if they're not done well 3D really just makes for a visual distraction from the suspension of disbelief that's the whole reason for going to a movie anyway. I love seeing plenty of explosions and cool visual effects, but it seems like it gets used as a crutch for lack of meaningful content in some cases. *cough* Avatar *cough*

I admit I can't see the effects because of a depth perception problem, but I've talked to friends who can see it when they talk about it, it seems pretty pointless. They've never said to me "yeah that part where you saw stuff flying at you really helped convey the feeling that the character was boxed into an inescapable situation."

I suppose things may change where the 3D camera work may be used as more than just a cheap visual crutch for dipsh*t fanboys but I haven't seen it yet.

My verdict

Thor made for a good movie going experience, I wanted a superhero movie and it delivered. Plenty of mythology, plenty of story that introduced a new character. Yet at the same time the movie itself wasn't bogged down by trying to do too much. The were plenty of laughs and it was serious when things were about to go down. The only downer aside from the 3D was a bit of plot convenience and cliche.

I'm planning on going again with some friends, I imagine this as being one of those movies that gets better the second time you see it.

Off The Clock: Resident Evil Afterlife

Get a life mario!

Resident Evil: AfterlifeIt was date night, both my girlfriend and I are fans of zombie movies. So we decided to go see the new Resident Evil movie.

The Premise: This is movie number 4 in the series, so if you don't know the back-story I'll fill you in with some possible spoilers for the previous three movies.

The Umbrella Corporation developed the T-Virus and thought they could control it. After an accident in Raccoon City the virus spread across the world turning humanity and animals alike into masses of zombies.

There are some survivors, most of which are hidden away in Umbrella Corporation's underground bunkers.

The others are mostly average people just trying to survive.

Alice was an employee of the corporation, she was determined to help bring them down. After surviving the Hive she was captured and experimented on by Umbrella. One of the side-effects of their experiments was that Alice gained super-human abilities and then escaped.

Fast forward, Alice finds out Umbrella has been trying to clone her so that they can find a way to domesticate the T-Virus infected population.

After freeing the clones at the end of the third movie, she goes after Umbrella in Japan while the group of survivors that were with her escape toward Alaska.

That's where Afterlife picks up.

How was it?: It's an action movie, plain and simple.

As in the previous three movies they included a lot of stuff that was in the games or at least that you could see were influenced by the games. They worked in some of the well known characters from the games that have pretty much been ignored to this point for some added kick and there was a fight scene with a huge MoFo that was clearly inspired by RE 4.

The story wasn't particularly deep, but the fight scenes and special effects were gratuitous. They made ample use of what I'm sure was some awesome 3D.

This was my first movie that was in 3D and as I expected I couldn't see the optical effects (I my right eye wanders and so my depth perception gets thrown off). But it was very obvious when they were trying to use the effects.

Overall: This movie will only appeal to Resident Evil fans, Zombie fans, and Action fans. Probably in that order.

Or who knows it may not appeal to a number of Resident Evil fans. I enjoyed all of the movies previous to this one.

They don't follow the games, but why would I want to see a movie about a game I've already played?

My Recommendation: If you saw the previous movies and liked them, go see this one and enjoy it. It's well made, the acting is pretty good all around, as is the dialog. It also does a great job with all of the classic zombie movie moments as well.

Touch of Nostalgia: Chrono Trigger

Chrono_Trigger

I've been thinking about this particular topic since I started this blog. I've been thinking what makes games great? What makes you want to keep playing them over and over again?

I believe it's a mix of good game play and overall fun in most cases.

In the case of Chrono Trigger there are many factors that can't be overlooked.

The story is superb, the characters have lots of in depth interactions while you're traveling back and forth through time.

The characters themselves are very memorable. Each having a unique back story and motivation that drives them.

The battle system was innovative for its' day allowing you to choose from Active Time Battle (the battle continues whether you've selected an action or not) or Wait mode which is the classic Turn Based RPG method of doing things. The real innovation though was the combo system that allows you to use two or more character abilities together for increased effects.

The music in the game is very memorable and for me pretty emotion provoking at times when paired with the current game actions.

After some recent thought, I think the end fight is with one of the least developed characters I've ever seen in a SquareSoft Game however. Lavos crashes to earth in 65 million BC and then destroys the world in 1999 AD. That's it, that's the extent of its' character development.

But then again, that's really all Lavos needs as all the other events in the game unfold because its' presence.

Overall I wholeheartedly recommend this game to anyone who enjoys RPGs, the first time through, if you do all the side-quests it will last you about 25-30 hours. There is some replay value in that you get different endings depending where and when you defeat Lavos. One of the endings in the DS version help set the stage for the sequel Chrono Cross.

Off The Clock: The Expendables

Get a life mario!

I had a chance to go check out The Expendables the other day.

This movie is a guy's movie and it makes no apologies.

I doubt they could have injected any more testosterone into this movie if they wanted to.

Copious amounts of explosions and gun fights. Plenty of fist fights (one of which involved some dipshit woman beater and all his faggot friends getting what they deserve) and some sweet bikes and a truck mixed in.

All in all, this movie was a fun ride.

A ride that's the result of nuclear reactor exploding and you're on top of a piece of plate still holding on for dear life.

If you're a male that's accepting of your inner nature to enjoy explosions and fist fights, this movie is worth a watch.
